First Impression and Beyond
The Importance of First Impressions
It has been revealed that we decide on a person's character within 7-8 seconds, even without speaking to them. Appearance plays a role here. We look at the clothing of a person we meet (What did Mevlana say? "People are welcomed by their clothes, entertained by their words."), their hair, height, beauty, friendliness, coldness, and smile. All of these are direct reasons that affect the first impression. When a comparison was made between the salaries of tall men and short men, it was found that tall men earn 10 percent more. If a person is beautiful or handsome, they always start life 1-0 ahead. In fact, in some cultures, it is said to be 5-0. Beauty is important in forming a first impression, but people who are not beautiful have an advantage in any case if they possess personal qualities that compensate for that lack. For example, your girlfriend might not be beautiful, but her conversation and tone of voice are so impressive that they captivate you, or she is so helpful that you overlook all her shortcomings. You can find qualities in her that other people don't see. This is why criticisms like "I really don't understand what you see in her!" emerge in our society. Therefore, while appearance is certainly very important, one should not get stuck on it. Especially in emotional relationships, if you have rejected someone because of their appearance, you also need to make a list of what you might have missed out on in that person.
