Amniocentesis: The Pregnant Woman's Nightmare

Amniocentesis: The Pregnant Woman's Nightmare

Amniotic Fluid Contains Fetal Cells.

This is a diagnostic test, especially for pregnant women over 35 years of age. It involves taking a sample of the amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby in the womb and protects it from external factors. The amniotic fluid contains chemical substances and cells belonging to the baby. The possibility of something happening to the baby during the amniocentesis procedure, performed under ultrasound guidance, frightens all pregnant women. However, if performed by a skilled specialist, the risk of miscarriage is reduced.

Performed Between Weeks 16-20.

Amniocentesis is used to screen for chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders, and metabolic diseases that may be present in the babies of older pregnant women. Amniocentesis is performed between the 16th and 20th week of pregnancy. It is essential that it is performed under the guidance of a specialist doctor because there is still a risk of miscarriage. Therefore, before the procedure, the specialist doctor informs the expectant mother about this and advises her to rest for 24 hours and be cautious afterwards.
