Limb Lengthening Methods
Limb Lengthening Surgery
First of all, who is limb lengthening surgery applied to? This method can be applied to those with leg length discrepancy, dwarfs, and those experiencing physiological developmental disorder - growth retardation. It is mostly preferred as a surgical treatment option for patients suffering from dwarfism. Again, if your height is shorter than the average height, you can benefit from this cosmetic procedure.
Limb Lengthening Techniques
In limb lengthening techniques, a device invented by Llizarov was first used. Then, the limb lengthening procedure was developed over time, making it safer and faster. Today, utilizing the latest technologies, it is used in bones by separating them into femur or tibia surgery, and gradually distributed with 1 mm increments until the desired height is achieved. The apparatus used in this treatment provides regrowth through the gaps in the bone. In the Llizarov or External Fixator methods, limbs can be lengthened with fixators without internal bone support in the Ilizarov and HolyFIx methods. At this stage, the patient is connected to an external device that supports daily bone growth, achieving elongation. The risk factor in this treatment is the danger of open wounds that may occur due to screws and pins in patients because the device is placed externally.
