Why Is Wi-Fi Slow in One Room? Three Simple Checks

If your internet works well elsewhere at home but videos freeze or downloads slow down in one room, the problem may be how well the wireless signal reaches that room. Before buying new equipment, use the same phone to compare the connection in two places.

Find out where the slowdown starts

Try the same task next to the router and in the room where you notice the problem. If possible, repeat the test at around the same time of day. If the connection works well near the router but slows down farther away, start by looking at the walls between the rooms and the router’s location. If both spots are slow, pause other downloads at home and try again.

Try moving the router

Take the router out of any closed cabinet and place it in an open, elevated spot. Keeping it behind metal objects or in a far corner of your home can make coverage worse in some rooms. After moving it, repeat the same test in the problem room so you can compare the results.

Try a different Wi-Fi band in the distant room

If your router lists separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, compare them in the distant room. In many homes, 2.4 GHz can reach farther, while 5 GHz can deliver higher speeds at short range. Use the band that gives you the more stable connection where you spend the most time online.
